The existence of  a Silk Road unified digital market will ensure free traffic of goods, service and capital, increase  economic activities and create startups and labs. It will create new jobs and promote the introduction of innovative technologies.

In March, 2018, Mamuka Bakhtadze, the Minister of Finance of Georgia and Mikheil Batiashvili, the Rector of Business and Technology University, made a presentation of the project “Digital Silk Road”.

Georgia has started working on a very important project, which implies harmonization of Silk Road with the Unified Digital Market.  The aim of this project is to accelerate digital development of Georgia, a country located in the centre of Silk Road, to make it the leader and the key player of the region in electronic trading technologies.

In order to implement the project, international technological consortium will be created with the involvement of technological companies and the creation of a new platform will start. The platform will connect the participant countries within the region.

For transition to modern digital technologies and highly competitive, knowledge-based economy, it is necessary to raise the involvement of young generation in this process and make effective use of human capital and local resources. Digital Silk Road project will attract professional staff, students and startups involved in computer sciences and IT technologies and business sector.

Digital Silk Road project implies implementation of technological platforms, which will enable member countries to use technological opportunities, develop technologically, use digital technologies in trade, exchange and share different technologies, use technological data of freight traffic.

The idea of implementing Digital Silk Road project, which was announced in March, this year by Mamuka Bakhtadze,  the Minister of Finance and the special representative of Georgia for the  Silk Road- related issues  and Mikheil Batiashvili, the Rector  of Business and Technology university, was supported by the global technological company such as “Microsoft”, which has recently been actively cooperating with public and private sectors and educational institutions of Georgia.

On April 12, in support of the implementation of the project, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Ministry of Finance, Business and Technology University and “Microsoft”.

The document was signed by Mamuka Bakhtadze, the Minister of Finance and the official representative of Georgia for the issues related to “New Silk Road”,  Mikheil Batiashvili, the Rector of Business and Technology University, and Nikoloz Doborjginidze, the Director of the Company “Microsoft Georgia”. 


Within the framework of the agreement, the parties agree to cooperate to create a unified electronic trade platform of the Silk Road member countries, which will support the manufacturers and suppliers to pitch to potential economic partners and implement online activities under the conditions of free competition. The agreement envisages creation of working teams, which will facilitate the achievement of the project goals. Furthermore, the parties of the agreement will cooperate to provide technical, research and intellectual support, and increase the involvement of Silk Road member countries, international organizations and donors.

The goal of the Digital Silk Road Project isto support the acceleration of digital development of Georgia, a country located in the centre of Silk Road, to make it the leader and the key player of the region in electronic trading technologies. Digital Silk Road Project will also attract and involve professional staff employed in computer engineering and IT technologies, business sector as well as students and startups in implementation of this innovative idea.
